I am an avid reader, time permitting, and enjoy playing tennis. My children all played tennis in high school and my youngest son played for the University of Minnesota until he graduated with his accountancy and finance degree. My older son graduated with a civil engineering degree and works for the state of North Dakota, and my youngest daughter earned degrees in accountancy and human resource management.
I started working for the Department of Accountancy in August 1986.
I earned a BA in Journalism and Social Studies with a minor in Education and student taught under Ray Holmberg at Central High School. Ray Holmberg has been a member of the ND Senate since 1977 and was a great mentor. After graduation, I left to work in Medora that summer where I had worked every summer during college.
I worked in business before coming back to UND to get a Masters of Accountancy, graduating in May 1986 and passed the last part of the CPA exam that spring. Since starting, I have taught Accounting principles classes every semester and developed the Accounting 201 online class.
When Mike Bader retired, I took over the Accounting 218, Advanced Spreadsheet Applications class, and taught first Lotus and then Excel. That class has always had a link to computer programming; in fact, for many years it was a computer programming class, first in FORTRAN, then Basic, before it went to a pure spreadsheet class in the late 1980s. We still do some programming in the class since we spend one module working with Visual Basic for Applications in Excel.
I have been the advisor to the college honorary, Beta Gamma Sigma, since 1999.
I have always worked in some accounting related job since 1972, currently working for Business Specialties, a small CPA firm in Grand Forks. I do the sales tax reporting for all our clients.
