Biography
Kirk D. Williams is a Research Engineer at the EERC, where he is currently involved in projects related to pilot-scale combustion projects for residential-, commercial-, and utility-scale applications of coal-fired combustion systems, including fuel characterization, emission monitoring and testing, infrared evaluation of flame stability and flame characterization, and evaluation of ash fouling potential; renewable energy; carbon capture and sequestration; hydrogen end-use demonstration, education, and outreach; water quantity and quality issues; municipal wastewater and landfill biogas treatment; high-temperature research on metal alloys and ceramics; infrared imaging and analysis of high-temperature combustion processes; and the corrosion properties of flowing slag. Mr. Williams’ principal areas of interest and expertise include pilot-scale performance evaluation of coal-, oil-, and biomass-fired combustion systems; mercury sampling; materials engineering; analytical metallurgy; advanced structural composites; advanced energy systems; mechanical engineering; and thermal imaging applications. He has additional expertise in applied environmental engineering, applied and theoretical geophysical prospecting techniques, hydrogeology, fluid flow modeling, geodetic global positioning surveying, and geographical information systems. Mr. Williams received his B.S. degree in Geophysics and M.S. degree in Geological Sciences from the University of California, Riverside. Prior to his position at the EERC, he was as an Environmental Scientist with Camp Dresser & McKee, a Geophysicist with Parsons Engineering Science, and a Staff Research Associate/Instructor in the Department of Earth Sciences Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Riverside. Mr. Williams is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers. He has authored or coauthored numerous publications.
