Biography
Matthew Fleischmann joined the UCC in August 2024 as one of the Health Service Doctoral Interns. Matthew is a PhD candidate in counselling psychology at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec. Originally from Toronto, Matthew is excited to spend his year in Grand Forks at the UCC, working with students to help them with their mental health needs. Upon completing his internship, Matthew plans to return to Toronto where he will complete his year of supervised practice and pursue licensure as a psychologist while continuing to engage in a program of research.
Matthew approaches therapy from a collaborative perspective, working with his clients to ensure a strong therapeutic relationship. His client-centered approach incorporates techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness/self-compassion-based therapies. Matthew strives to help his client feel safe, supported, and cared for, while encouraging and challenging them as they navigate their journey through mental health challenges. At the UCC, Matthew offers individual counselling and ADHD assessments under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.
In his spare time, Matthew enjoys reading, watching movies and TV shows, exploring local attractions, and spending time with his wife, infant son, and dog.
