Biography
I am an associate professor in the department of Education, Health, & Behavior Studies at the University of North Dakota. My educational background has fostered a diverse research skill set, which I have enthusiastically endeavored to use in novel research topics and methodologies. I have a strong background in Biomechanics as well as Pedagogy within Kinesiology. Using this skill set, I have established, funded, equipped, and currently direct the BiPed laboratory at the University of North Dakota (UND). This lab specializes in motion capture and its application across various disciplines. The BiPed lab and its novel approach have fostered relationships throughout UND, including Pedagogical Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Biomedical Engineering, and Aerospace. Through these bridging efforts, I have found a rich research environment that is both personally fulfilling and informs my work with undergraduates and graduate students. As a result of my growth within Biomechanics and Pedagogical research, I have two strong lines of inquiry. The first is the application of novel Biomechanics techniques for human gait research, explicitly dealing with injury prevention. This line has taken shape in the form of foot arch studies with the Physical Therapy faculty and Lunar/Martian gait research with Aerospace. In this line of research I have current research projects with NASA and the US ARMY. Currently I am part of a research team examining the incorperation of Paraastronauts into future space flight. My second line of research remains the development of superior pedagogical strategies based on non-linear dynamics and their quantitative assessment.
Biomechanics is highly cross-disciplinary; additionally, the underlying motion capture inherent in this area of science extends this skill set into many other disciplines. The high flexibility of this skill set has allowed me to make connections and meaningful contributions to Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace, and Physical Therapy. These opportunities have allowed me to apply my expertise in human motion capture in ways that have not previously been explored. Specifically, I have used 3D motion capture and principal components analysis to determine optimal gait performance during fractional gravitational loading for space suit design. Also, I have used the application of 3D motion capture for foot dynamics to assess relationships between the plantar facia's deflection and elastic velocity in determining foot arch health. This ongoing project shows promise in detecting individuals at risk for plantar facia injury.
Non-linear pedagogy and its application within the physical education environment has been and continues to be a passion of mine. I have identified and am currently working on motion capture techniques for quantifying fundamental phenomena within this area of science. Namely the identification and quantification of reciprocal recursive nonconscious mimicry. Specifically, the assessment of interpersonal student mimicry through 3D motion capture and principal component analysis. If this line of inquiry is successful, it will help students who do not benefit from the current instructional paradigm, opening up more significant opportunities for success among these children.
