Michelle D. Griffin, Ph.D.

Biography

Dr. Michelle D. Griffin has over 34 years of combined experience in the field of PK-12 education, special education and higher education. She began her career as a middle school teacher and went onto become a special education teacher. She worked with students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders and intellectual disabilities. She also worked for several years in a residential setting for students with emotional/behavioral disorders. During her years in public education, Dr. Griffin also served as an educational evaluator, an assistant special education director and as a special education program coordinator for various special education units in ND. She continues to assist special education units with assessments, IEPs, and transition to adult life services. Dr. Griffin began working at UND in the Special Education Program in 2000 as a Clinical Supervisor for the Special Education Resident Teacher Program, while also teaching several special education graduate courses including Legal/Ethical Aspects in Special Education, Introduction to Learning Disabilities, Progress Monitoring, Behavior Management, Advanced Assessment, Transition to Adult Life, IEP Development, Advanced Methods in Learning Disabilities, and serving as a supervisor for on-the-job internships in special education. Currently, as an Associate Professor in the Special Education Department, Dr. Griffin teaches courses at the master's, doctorate and undergraduate levels.  She primarily teaches Legal/Ethical Aspects in Special Education, Advanced Methods in Learning Disabilities, Progress Monitoring, Foundations of Special Education with Emphasis in ASD, EBD, ID and LD, The Educational Diagnostician, and also supervises special education practicums for students who need special education licensure in Minnesota.

She was the recipient of the College of Education and Human Development's 2021 Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award.
