Curriculum Vitae
Biography
Rachel L. Navarro, Ph.D. is currently a Professor of Counseling Psychology and Training Director of the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of North Dakota (UND). She also is the principal investigator and co-director of the Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) and principal investigator of the North Dakota Rural and Tribal Suicide Care (ND RT-SC) Project--both of which are funded by SAMHSA. She earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a MS in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri. Her primary areas of research are the academic, career, and socio-emotional functioning of Latina/os and Indigenous peoples. Her other professional interests include graduate training, rural psychology and integrated health care.
Dr. Navarro's programmatic research is in the subfield of multicultural counseling psychology and includes invited and professionally refereed presentations, manuscripts under review, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters. Her research currently encompasses the areas of (a) academic and career development, (b) campus climate, and (c) well-being—all with a focus on culturally diverse communities and their members, particularly Latina/os and Indigenous peoples and those living in rural areas. For example, she is very interested in the entry and persistence of women and Latinés in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors and careers. It is her hope that the research will guide individual counseling as well as group and organizational prevention and intervention programs conducted by academic, career, and personal counselors; vocational psychologists; and K-12 and higher education personnel professionals. Her other professional interests include graduate training, rural psychology and integrated health care.
