International Travel
Your starting point for safe, compliant, and well-prepared travel outside the United States.
Whether you're traveling for research, conferences, collaboration, or other university-related purposes, it's essential to understand the requirements and responsibilities that come with international travel.
Definition of International Travel: Travel outside the 50 U.S. states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories.
- Pre-Approval: Check with your division/department for potential requirements prior to planning or booking travel.
- Registration: International travel must be registered with UND's Office of Safety and Risk Management. Registration should be completed at least three weeks before departure.
- Travel Insurance: Medical and emergency travel insurance is strongly recommended. Contact the Office of Risk Management for coverage options.
Export controls apply to where you travel, what you take, who you work with and what you work on when engaging in UND business while traveling outside the U.S. When conducting UND business outside the United States, all items in your possession are considered exports and are subject to export control. International activities are subject to export control include but are not limited to speaking engagements, collaborations, conferences, research and training or education. Export control regulations help protect sensitive technologies and information. Export control violations can result in fines, penalties, or restrictions.

- Determine if your destination, equipment, or collaborations are permitted to or require special permissions.
- Ensure compliance with federal laws and university policies.

- If your travel is funded by federal grants, you must use a U.S. flag air carrier unless an exception applies.
