Biological Safety
The Office of Safety provides biosafety services and recommendations to all the departments and researchers at University of North Dakota (UND).
The primary objective of the UND Biosafety Program is to ensure a safe working environment for faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and visitors. In search of this goal, our office ensures that laboratory facilities and operations conform to the regulatory requirements as set by the UND Institutional Biosafety committee, the North Dakota Department of Health, and federal agencies (CDC, NIH, OSHA, etc).
To mitigate the inherent risks associated with the laboratory setting and to prevent lab acquired infections, we seek to build a culture of safe work practices at the university. Our office provides several teaching resources to those involved in the study of biological activities in the form of classroom and online training sessions as well as informational modules found within this website.
Our office also seeks to facilitate collaborative outreach between investigators at the UND and the larger academic community. To this end, we provide support and training for all areas of shipping of biological materials. Finally, our office provides a route to properly dispose of both biologically hazardous and regulated medical wastes through our contracted disposal servicer.
By making these resources available, it is our goal to put measures into place to make our students, employees, and the environment safer from biohazards utilized in important research that benefits human, animal, and plant health.
