Safeguarding UND Email
Working to Keep You Safe
All students have Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enabled for their UND Office 365 email account. MFA adds a second layer of security when logging into Office 365 and other associated applications. It requires a physical device such as a phone, tablet, or token to authenticate in addition to your username and password. This extra step will prevent unauthorized access to accounts and services.
Additionally, all students will be prompted for Duo when accessing financial aid information and phone numbers in Campus Connection.
Duo is no longer able to deliver automated phone calls for authentication to users with +86 numbers. International students attending UND with a +86 country code (China) may experience this issue. All other authentication methods, including phone-based options such as Duo Push and SMS passcodes, are not affected. Why might Duo phone callback authentication fail to Chinese +86 numbers?
Attention: To fully utilize the security benefits afforded by MFA, some email clients and phone apps no longer work for UND email after March 20, 2019. This includes:
- Outlook 2013 and earlier
- Mac mail on 10.13 and earlier
- iOS email built-in mail apps 10 and earlier
- all Android built-in mail apps
- all POP/IMAP clients.
If you are using one of these applications, we recommend you switch over to a supported email client, such as Outlook 2016 (or newer) or the Outlook App on your mobile device. Using Outlook will also give you access to additional features such as better meeting management and integration to report phishing emails.
For more information regarding supported email clients and apps visit NDUS CTS "Duo MFA and Office365 Email"
iPhone users using the native iOS mail app may need to delete and re-add their campus email profile for Duo MFA to activate (see how to delete profile). If you are using the Outlook App on your iPhone, then no action is necessary.
