FAQS ABOUT CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK

Information About UND NetX Project

The UND NetX: Elevating Connectivity Project is an initiative to enhance the University of North Dakota's (UND) network infrastructure to support the growing digital needs of the community. This includes the development of a new network for residential halls, and academic and administrative buildings.

UND is transitioning to a managed hosted network service to ensure a reliable, resilient, and secure network that can meet the increasing demand for bandwidth and support emerging technologies. This transition also allows UND to move from a capital expenditure (CapX) model to an operational expenditure (OpX) model, providing cost predictability and control.

UND transitioned network support and management to Boldyn, a trusted managed hosted network service provider.

Boldyn is the parent company of Apogee, a trusted leader in network support for higher education institutions. Boldyn’s expertise in wireless and technologies such as 5G private cellular networks will benefit UND as we embrace innovative pedagogy and high-intensity research activities requiring cutting-edge technology. The partnership will enable support of the NDUS Strategic Plan and the UND LEADS strategic plan while setting up UND and its community for success in the years to come.

The key benefits include:

  • Comprehensive wireless and wired network coverage

  • Onsite field support staff engaging with our community to gauge network performance

  • 24/7/365 Network Operations Center to monitor network performance

  • New network design to support the growing needs and future growth

  • Reduced operational cost

  • Residential halls network migration: By fall 2024 - COMPLETED

  • Academic and administrative buildings network migration: By July 2025.

Students in residential halls will benefit from guaranteed high-speed bandwidth, 24/7/365 access to a self-service portal for quick and secure WiFi connection, and continuous support from Boldyn.

Current network users may experience some changes as the new network infrastructure is implemented. These changes are aimed at providing a more reliable and high-performance network. There may be brief periods of transition where users might notice temporary disruptions, but these will be minimized as much as possible. The overall goal is to enhance the user experience with improved network speed, coverage, and support.

Data privacy and security are top priorities for the UND NetX Project. The project will implement robust security measures to protect sensitive information and ensure compliance with relevant data protection regulations. This includes encryption of data, secure access controls, regular security audits, and continuous monitoring for potential threats. Boldyn, the managed hosted network service provider, has extensive experience in maintaining high standards of data privacy and security

The UND NetX Project will enhance remote access capabilities for users by providing a more robust and secure network infrastructure. This includes improved VPN services and secure remote access solutions that ensure users can connect to the UND network from anywhere with greater reliability and security. The project aims to support the increasing demand for remote work and learning, ensuring that users have seamless access to UND resources regardless of their location.

The UND NetX Project is designed to improve network performance, even during peak usage times. The new infrastructure will include high-density network solutions and next-generation architecture to support increased bandwidth demands. This will help ensure that the network remains stable and performs well, even when many users are connected simultaneously. Continuous monitoring and proactive maintenance by Boldyn will further help manage network performance and address any issues promptly.

The UNDNetX Project is designed with future technological advancements in mind. The next-generation network architecture will support emerging technologies such as 5G, ensuring that the infrastructure can adapt to new developments and innovations. This forward-thinking approach will help UND stay at the forefront of technological progress, providing the community with access to the latest and most advanced network capabilities.
