Radiation Safety

Radiation safety focuses on minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation, employing strategies like time, distance, and shielding to reduce dose. In emergencies, protective measures such as sheltering in place, using shielding, and personal protective equipment (PPE) become crucial according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Key Principles of Radiation Safety

  • Time: Minimize the duration of exposure to a radiation source.
  • Distance: Maximize the distance from the radiation source.
  • Shielding: Use appropriate materials to block or absorb radiation.

Emergency Response

  • Shelter in place: In a radiation emergency, moving to the center of a multi-story building or a basement offers better protection.
  • Shielding: Walls, fire trucks, and even personal protective clothing can act as shields against different types of radiation.
  • PPE: Respirators, protective clothing, and alarming dosimeters are essential for first responders and radiation workers
