How to Avoid a Citation
Most parking citations can be avoided by following a few simple steps
1. Read the signs
Always check posted lot and zone signs before parking or refer to the campus parking maps for guidance. Rules may change depending on the lot, time of day or special events.
2. Purchase a Permit
All vehicles parked on campus must be associated to a valid UND parking permit. Visitors to the UND campus should review the Visitor Information for parking options. ADA placard or plate holders must also have a UND permit, misuse of ADA parking can result in a citation being issued.
3. Park Where Your Permit Allows
Park only where your permit is valid. Each lot has signs posted that provide information on the permit(s) that are allowed to park in the lot and when they are required. Some spaces or areas of the lot will have 'No Parking' signs - these areas are always off limits. Other stalls may be marked as reserved for state fleet vehicles, specific permits, or event a specific permit holder. Only vehicles with the proper permit may use these reserved stalls.
4. No Plate or One Plate on Vehicle
Your vehicle must always have a plate on file that matches what's on the car. If your plate hasn't arrived yet, temporarily register the last 8 digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN) and select 'Missing Plate' as the state. If you vehicle has only one plate, it must be mounted and visible from the roadway in the parking lot.
If you receive new or replacement plates at any time, you must either update the vehicle through the parking portal or contact Parking Services to have the vehicle updated.
5. Enter Your License Plate Correctly
Make sure that when entering your license plate or the last 8 digits of the VIN if the vehicle does not have plates, that the plate is entered as it appears on the license plate without the state identifier. Select the appropriate state from the state field if the field is provided in the Parking Portal, Passport, Ramp Pay stations, or T2 Mobile Pay when entering vehicle information.
6. Park Correctly
Always park within a proper stall. A proper stall is defined by painted lines on both sides of your vehicle. During the winter, when snow may cover the lines, use the layout of nearby vehicles and curbs to park correctly within the row. Areas without markings aren't legal parking spaces. Vehicles that are not parked in a legally defined parking stall, blocking multiple spaces, or stick out into the roadway can be cited. Be considerate of others and make sure your vehicle fits properly into the space.
7.Avoid Disabled Parking Spaces (Must have State issued ADA permit)
Parking in ADA spaces at UND requires that a current, valid UND permit covers the vehicle. If an ADA placard or plate is not present on the vehicle, it may be issued a $100 citation.
8. Do not use any of the Visitor Spaces in any lot on campus
If the vehicle you are driving is associated to you or your permit you cannot use the visitors’ parking spaces located throughout the campus. These spaces are intended for visitors to the campus that do not have a parking permit.
9. Pay-To-Park Zones
If you parking in an hourly parking across campus, payment must be completed before stepping out of the vehicle. Leaving a vehicle without paying can result in a citation being issued if payment is not completed by the time an enforcement vehicle arrives.
10. Know When Permits Are Required
Permit or payment is required Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. year-round, including academic breaks. Weeknights and Weekends are generally open parking; however, restricted zones such as housing lots, reserved stalls, safety zones, "no overnight" areas, time-limited stalls, and parking lots used for Ralph Engelstad Arena events are still enforced. Parking rules and safety regulations are monitored 24/7.
11. Check Your UND Email
UND Parking Services sends out updates to the campus community through email on if you've received a warning or a citation, permit rules, lot closures, waitlist offers for permit upgrades or special events that affect parking.
