Policies & Regulations
UND uses a virtual permit system, meaning your license plate serves as your parking permit. It's essential that your license plate information is entered accurately and kept up to date in the UND Parking Portal.
- If your vehicle does not have license plate yet, the last 8 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) can temporarily serve as your license plate, until plates are added. If you need to update your vehicle information, you can use the UND Parking Portal or contact UND Parking Services.
- A valid parking permit is required to park in any campus lot unless signage indicates otherwise. Permit enforcement is active year-round, and vehicles parked without the appropriate permit type will be issued a citation.
- UND Parking Services primarily offers annual permits for students and employees that are valid from August 16 and expire August 15 of the following year, regardless of the purchase date. For individuals who only occasionally park on campus, daily permits and hourly parking are available throughout designated pay-to-park areas.
- Due to the limited parking availability on campus, only one vehicle per permit may be parked on campus at a time.
Parking Enforcement
- Vehicles without a UND permit are able to park on campus for a limited time via Hourly Pay-to-Park.
- Permits are valid yearly from August 16th to August 15th of the following year. Permits are virtual and are associated to a license plate.
- A valid temporary pass must be displayed or a UND virtual permit associated to plate to avoid citations.
- If no permanent license plate is affixed to the vehicle, the last 8-digits of the ‘Vehicle Identification Number’ (VIN) are to be used instead. Under the option for ‘State, please select ‘Missing Plate’. Once you receive your official license plate and have placed it on your vehicle, please update your permit accordingly.
- Parking enforcement is conducted year-round.
- Open parking hours are Monday through Friday 4 p.m. to 7 a.m., and all day on Saturday and Sunday.
- Ralph Engelstad Arena events will be enforced and are an exception to the open parking hours.
- UND permit is not required, but parking in restricted zones will continue to be monitored/enforced 24/7 (e.g. housing zones, reserved, safety concerns, no overnight, time limit zones, Engelstad Arena events).
If you plan on leaving campus for winter break and will not be taking your vehicle, UND offers the following parking options based on your parking permit.
Overnight Permit Holders
Permit holders with an overnight "O" permit can leave their vehicle in the assigned overnight lot for the duration of winter break. Prior to leaving for break please make sure that the license plate that is facing the driving lane of the parking lot is visible and clear of snow.
Parking Ramp
Any UND permit holder may choose to also utilize the parking ramp as a sheltered location to park their vehicle. The cost is $7 per day (excluding weekends or university holidays). Payment for long-term sessions can be made at the pay stations located on the first and fourth floor of the southwest tower of the parking ramp.
Bicycles
- Bicycles must always be parked in bike racks; bike racks are located outside most buildings and throughout campus
- Locking bikes to trees, railings, or sign posts is prohibited
- UND prohibits the use of bicycles inside University buildings, on any pedestrian ramps, loading docks and on rails
- Adhere to any signs posted regarding the use and parking of non-motorized vehicles
- Blocking any entrance or exit to a building is prohibited
- Parking in an stairwell, hallway or any other location that violates fire and safety regulations is prohibited
- Students residing in university residence halls or apartments should contact the Housing office for information on Housing specific bicycle policies.
Motorcycle Parking
Winter motorcycle commuting is allowed; however, motorcycles may not be stored or left overnight on campus in parking lots or the parking ramp.
Annual reminders will be shared each October with motorcycle permit holders. For questions or assistance, please contact Parking Services.
UND works to inspect and clear snow from all sidewalks and parking lots throughout the winter each day throughout the campus with the goal of completing the snow removal process by 12 p.m. the day following the snow event occurring.
Within UND parking lots, the UND Snow Removal crews will clear the driving lane of the parking lot of snow. Depending on snow amounts, there may be a ridge of snow behind your vehicle that you may need to drive over to get out of the parking stall. If your vehicle becomes stuck on a ridge between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to contact Parking Services for assistance.
Full Lot Clearing
After heavy snow fall or during academic breaks, UND will attempt to remove as much snow from parking lots as permitted. Notification of a lot closure due to snow removal will be sent in advance and parking alternatives will be arranged for those in the affected zone or parking lot during the closure.
Reporting Unsafe Conditions in Parking Lots
If you notice icy or slippery areas within a parking lot, please report them as soon as possible by contacting UND Parking Services at 701.777.3551 or by emailing parking@UND.edu with the location and a brief description of the issue.
