Retiree Benefits
All UND employees have these benefits:
- Health, State Life (basic), dental and vision insurance, at cost to employee, may be continued as long as you receive a retirement benefit from NDPERS or TIAA.
- State Life supplemental insurance, UND Life insurance or AFLAC may be continued by remitting the premium directly to the company.

You may continue to enjoy these benefits of being a UND employee:
- Chester Fritz Library – UND retirees continue to have circulation privileges.
- Founder’s Day – If retiring and employed at UND for 15 years or more, contact us to be honored at Founder’s Day.
- Parking Office – Retirees may purchase a discounted permit annually to visit campus.
- One Stop Student Services – Anyone over the age of 65 may audit courses and receive a waiver of the audit fee.
- Wellness Center – Retirees may purchase a membership at the same rate as faculty/staff.
Retirement Checklist
Contact the Payroll Office to obtain information regarding retirement and insurance two to three months prior to your retirement date. It is also advisable to contact Social Security within two to three months prior to retiring or turning age 65.
NDPERS
2 - 3 months prior to your retirement date:
Request a Benefit Estimate by one of the following options:
- Contact NDPERS at 800.803.7377
- Request or prepare on NDPERS PERS Link Member Self Service
- Or contact Katie in HR/Payroll to request one for you
Contact Katie in HR/Payroll for an NDPERS Retirement Kit. In addition to the NDPERS Retirement Kit you will need:
- Copy of birth certificate (if married, also copy of spouse’s)
- Copy of marriage certificate
- Copy of Medicare Card(s) for self and spouse if eligible (Must have Medicare A&B to continue on the NDPERS Retiree Health Insurance)
TIAA
Prior to your retirement date:
- Contact TIAA at 800.842.2776 for retirement options or go online and click on Virtual Consultation, then Schedule and follow the prompts to schedule an appointment with a TIAA representative).
- Contact Brandi in HR/Payroll for an Insurance Retirement Kit.
- Copy of Medicare card(s) for self and spouse if eligible (Must have Medicare A&B to continue on the NDPERS Retiree Health Insurance).
UND Retiree Insurance Rates
Monthly rates are effective January 1, 2024. Contact NDPERS with questions at 1.800.803.7377.
COBRA
A member is eligible for COBRA continuation if enrolled in the Dakota Plan as an active employee and not eligible for Medicare. A member will have the option to continue coverage for 18 months under COBRA or until eligible for Medicare, whichever occurs first.

Medicare (A&B)
The Dakota Retiree Plan includes prescription drug coverage. These rates are subject to Medicare Part D increase at the end of each calendar year. The member must be receiving a retirement benefit from NDPERS or TIAA to qualify. If member/dependent did not enroll in the plan at the time he/she is eligible, coverage will cease on the first day of the month in which the member or dependents(s) became eligible.
