10 Ways to Avoid a Parking Citation
1. Purchase a Permit
All vehicles parked on campus must be associated to a valid campus permit. No permit is needed if parked in a metered space, but the meter must be paid. If you are a visitor to campus, please see visitor Information regarding your parking options. If you will be parking on campus using an ADA (disabled) placard, you still need a permit.
2. Park Where Your Permit Allows
Be sure to park only in zones or spaces specified by your permit type.
3. Check Signs
Before parking your vehicle, check the parking signs. Each lot has signs that provide information on the type(s) of permit(s) that are authorized. In addition, individual spaces within the lots may be marked for a specific type of permit (Designated Reserve). These spaces may be used only by those displaying the corresponding permit.
4. Breaks Don't Change Rules
Permit or payment is required M-F 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. nights and weekends have open parking. UND safety parking rules and regulations are enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Permit requirements during school break do not differ from requirements when school is in session.
5. Park in Marked Spaces Only
Parking spaces are indicated by a line or markings on both sides of the space. Areas without such markings are not legal parking spaces. Please make sure you are parked completely within the lined space (no wheels on or over the lines). Vehicles not parked completely within the designated space may receive a parking citation.
6. Pay for Metered Spaces
Meters must be paid and current in order for the vehicle to be legally parked. UND Permits are not valid in meter spaces, and the meter must be paid.
7. Watch for Expired Parking Meters
All campus parking meters have a maximum time limit. Each meter has a sign stating the maximum time the meter will allow. No grace period is given for expired meter violations. All vehicles parked in expired metered spaces are in violation and are subject to a citation. Meter information, including rates, is posted either on the meter itself, or at the lot entrance. If the meter is malfunctioning, contact Parking Services at 701.777.3551 immediately. If no contact is made, you will be in violation.
8. Avoid Disabled Parking Spaces
Parking in these spaces or areas without a valid UND parking permit, in addition to a state issued ADA hangtag or license plate issued to you may result in a $100 parking citation.
9. Be Mindful of How You Park
Even if you have a permit or have paid for the location in which you have parked, you may receive a citation for improper parking. This includes parking over the lines, thus taking up multiple parking spots, or having your vehicle stick out too far into a roadway. Be mindful and considerate when you park your vehicle.
10. No Plate Present
If no plate is present, the last 8 digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN) should be temporarily used and for the state select "Missing Plate". Once plate is known, add vehicle with new plate information. Email Parking Services to remove old vehicles.
