Employee Permit
The employee permit is available to all UND employees who regularly commute to campus. This permit allows parking in designated employee lots and zones and includes overnight parking. It's ideal for employees who need consistent access without time restrictions.

Economy Lot Permit
The Economy Lot permit offers a budget-friendly alternative to the standard commuter permit, providing access to a single designated lot on campus. This permit is ideal for employees who are looking to save on parking costs and are comfortable with a longer walk to their destination. Permit holders can also take advantage of the campus shuttle, which stops at the UND Bookstore and provides transportation closer to their building or office on campus. The economy lot is monitored and enforced like all campus lots, and the permit is only valid in the assigned lot.

Housing Resident Director
The Housing Head Resident permit is available for UND employees that serve as Residence Hall Directors for the residence halls on campus. It provides a reserved space in the campus housing lots near their assigned residence hall, ensuring reliable access at all times. In addition to housing lot access, this permit also allows parking in any employee commuter lot or zone offering flexibility for work or school related travel across campus.

Parking Ramp
The parking ramp permit provides access to all floors of the parking ramp, except for the 1st floor west side. It is ideal for employees seeking a sheltered parking option that protects vehicles from weather while maintaining proximity to core campus buildings. In addition to the ramp, this permit is also valid in any employee commuter lot or zone across campus allowing flexibility for work-related projects and meetings.

Employee Special Reserved Permit
This permit requires approval before purchase—contact Parking Services for more information.
The special reserved permit guarantees the permit holder their own individually marked parking stall on campus. These stalls are reserved exclusively for the assigned permit holder, offering the highest level of convenience for employees who need a reliable parking location close to their workplace or other areas on campus. This permit also includes access to the hourly pay zones across campus and all employee surface lots.
While every effort is made to ensure your assigned space is available at all times, there may be instances—such as unauthorized vehicles or weather-related conditions—where immediate access cannot be guaranteed. In these situations, the permit holder should first park in an available Passport Parking area or employee surface lot, then contact Parking Services to report the issue.

Parking Signs
All employee permits allow parking in parking lots and zones marked by a parking sign with a green employee sign. These signs are used in employee-only lots and shared lots. When parking on campus, look for one of the signs to confirm that you are in an employee zone.

Cost Comparison
To help employees choose the permit that best fits their needs and budget, the table below breaks down the weekly cost of each permit based on two common schedules: a 35-week academic year and a full 52-week year. These estimates assume the permit holder is parking on campus five days per week. Whether you're on campus year-round or primarily during the academic year, this comparison can help you evaluate which permit offers the best value for your routine.

Paying for Your Permit
UND Parking Services offers multiple convenient payment methods for employee permits. You can choose to pay in full at the time of purchase or take advantage of payroll deduction if you're eligible.
Payroll Deduction
Payroll deduction is available only to full-time benefited employees at UND. Each employee may have only one permit on payroll deduction at any given time. Deductions occur from September 15, 2025 to May 31, 2026, and cannot be made after May 31, 2026.
UND Parking Services offers two payroll deduction plans to fit your payment preferences.
One-Time Payroll Deduction
With this plan, the full cost of the permit is deducted in a single paycheck. This option allows you to pay for your permit all at once through your payroll.
Recurring Payroll Deduction
This plan divides the cost of the permit evenly across the paychecks from September 15, 2025 to May 31, 2026. For employees who begin after September 15, deductions will be adjusted based on the number of remaining pay periods.
Termination of Payroll Deduction
If you plan to leave UND and will no longer need your parking permit, please notify Parking Services prior to your departure by email. Include the following information in your message:
- Name
- Employee ID (EMPLID)
- The date you no longer need access
For employees on recurring payroll deduction, deductions will stop with your final paycheck.
For employees who paid via one-time payroll deduction, a refund will be issued based on the criteria outlined in the refund schedule.
Example Schedule
The payroll deduction option spreads the cost of your permit over multiple paychecks to make payments more manageable. The table below illustrates the approximate amount deducted per paycheck based on 18 payroll deductions during the full deduction period from September 15, 2025, to May 31, 2026.
If you enroll after this period begins, your per-paycheck deduction amount will be adjusted based on the number of remaining deductions.

Employee Permit Proration & Refund Information
Employee permits automatically prorates price on the 1st and 16th of each month starting on September 16, 2026.
Refund Eligibility
Refunds for permits are available for employees who no longer need their permit during the year. The refunded amount will be based on the following criteria:
- Permits purchased and refunded before August 16, 2025 will be given a refund for the purchased price
- Permits purchased or refunded from August 16, 2025 to April 15, 2026 are eligible for a refund until April 30, 2026. Refunds will follow an established price proration and refund schedule.
- Permits purchased on or after April 16, 2026 will be refunded 50% of the purchased value if refunded within 2 weeks of the purchased date.
If you no longer need your permit, please contact UND Parking Services in writing with the following information:
- Name
- NDUS ID
- Date that you no longer need access
Once the refund request is received and processed, the permit will be deactivated and the vehicles that the permit were associated with will no longer be able to be parked in the areas associated with that permit.
How to Purchase Your Permit
On-campus residents can purchase a permit for the 2025-26 Academic Year starting on July 30, 2025, at 8 a.m. CT.

Permits for New Employees
New UND employees are eligible for a free 3-day temporary parking permit. During your on-boarding process, you will be prompted to provide vehicle information so that we can issue a temporary permit to you. Your license plate acts as your permit at UND, so please ensure that the information provided on that form is accurate. If your vehicle is missing an official license plate, please provide the last 8-digits of the VIN in place of the license plate.

Retiree Permits
Retired employees of the University of North Dakota are eligible for a parking permit that allows access to all employee parking lots on campus.
Permit Eligibility Requirements
- The employee must be officially retired from UND at the time of requesting the permit
- The employee must not be receiving any compensation from a position at UND
- The retirement status for the employee must be verified by Human Resources
Permit Details
- Retiree permits are valid in all Employee, Student/Employee and Overnight/Student/Employee parking lots across campus. See the campus parking maps for exact parking lots across campus.
- They are not valid for overnight parking, reserved spaces or the parking ramp
- Permits cost $12 and are valid from August 16 to August 15 of the following year
- The retiree application must be filled each year that the retired employee would like to have the permit valid for

- Email parking@und.edu or visit the UND Parking Office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to get an application.
