The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost provides strategic vision, leadership and support for academic excellence and integrity to further the University’s academic mission through outstanding teaching and learning, cutting-edge scholarly and creative activity, and meaningful service to the public. It provides administrative oversite and leadership for the academic affairs and enrollment management operations of the university, in addition to strategic vision, leadership, and support for a range of primary and service units central to the successful operation of the University of North Dakota.

  • Provides support to Academic Deans who report directly to the Provost.
  • Provides support to colleges through the various offices that report to the VPAA. See additional agreements listed under Academic Administration.
  • Oversees curricular processes and program evaluation.
  • All Academic Affairs Council, State Board of Higher Education, and North Dakota University System academic processes are handled in the office.
  • Provides support for faculty recruiting and appointments, promotion and tenure processes, including post-tenure review processes, grievances and leaves, faculty awards, faculty evaluations, contracts, policy and procedures development and updating.
  • Provides support to University Senate and course release support to University Senate academic leadership.
  • Provides strategic academic leadership, vision and support for the University in areas including, but not limited to, program development, structure, positioning, delivery, effectiveness, and viability.
  • Provides HR support to faculty and staff in academic affairs.
  • Provides leadership and vision for key elements of the current UND LEADS strategic plan.
  • Provides support and leadership for faculty, staff, and student recruitment and retention success, opportunities, and practices.
  • Serves as an institutional sponsor for the incentive-based budget model.
  • Provides communication to campus by Provost, facilitates and supports shared governance through engagement with the Senate Budget Committee, Senate Executive Committee and other senate committees.
  • Provides H-1B visa and permanent residency processing for faculty and staff: requesting department pays attorney’s fees and filing costs associated with filing an H-1B petition. Costs and fees for permanent residency processing are divided between the department and the employee.
  • Oversees and facilitates complaints of misconduct and scholarship.
  • Provides conflict management services through Sustainable Solutions,LLC.
  • In partnership with other executive leaders on campus, provides leadership on issues of strategy and compliance regarding local, state, and national directives, orders, and initiatives.
  • In partnership with the UND CFO, Facilities, and executive leadership on campus, provides leadership and support for space utilization, building renovations, and capital projects, especially as they intersect with the academic affairs activities of the university.

The Air Force ROTC program at UND recruits and develops future Air Force officers through rigorous academic and leadership training, providing scholarships, and community service opportunities. The program supports both students and faculty, fostering a strong connection between the university and the military community. The university and the Air Force have a contractual agreement as an educational leadership pathway.

Core Services Specifics

  • Recruits new students to UND through National and Regional recruitment and scholarship programs.
  • Develops curriculum and instructs up to 36 credit hours in Aerospace Science for students in AF-ROTC.
  • Prepares AF-ROTC students to become Air Force Officers with 100% occupational outplacement.
  • ROTC provides additional support through advising, summer internships, leadership training, Air Force stipends, and scholarships.
  • Coordinates activities to enhance retention and build affinity with the military community.
  • Leads civic involvement program, building partnerships with local Military Affairs Committee within the Chamber of Commerce and with city officials to provide support for students and faculty. AF-ROTC students are dedicated to community service (Color Guard, Adopt a Highway, Ruck for Recovery, etc.).
  • Works with each academic college to plan, program, and monitor progress of students toward degree completion and graduation date in accordance with the Air Force policy.
  • Works with admissions, financial aid, and housing to recruit, retain, and bring national scholarship winners to UND.
  • Works with Enrollment Management and Student Success to improve retention and persistence for first year students.

Esports provides the organizational and support structures to promote and facilitate intercollegiate Esport competition at UND. As such, Esports identifies and recruits student-athletes to represent UND in several sponsored game titles. Esports organizes player tryouts, team selection processes, roster designations, team practices, league memberships, competition schedules, social media promotions and other such activities that facilitate UND’s intercollegiate Esports success. Esports maintains the intercollegiate facility including the VOD review room/classroom, practice court, casting booth, nutrition station, and the Fighting Hawks Arena. Finally, Esports works with players’ academic programs to increase retention and graduation rates of its players and seeks avenues of financial support outside UND for both the program and its players.

  • Provides coaching to intercollegiate Esports athletes on a title and team roster (e.g., League of Legends –GreenTeam).
  • Maintains the Esports Intercollegiate Facility space and equipment in good working condition.
  • Arranges and provides for team travel as necessary to compete in in-person (LAN) tournaments and league championships as necessary.
  • Maintains a recruiting database of high school players, potential transfers from other universities and colleges, and existing UND students and use said database for recruitment purposes.
  • Provides student/athlete support in the classroom, in competition, and in life.
  • Broadcasts Esports intercollegiate matches as part of league play, tournament play.
  • Participate in fundraising activities to support the Esports players and teams and the intercollegiate facility.

  • Coordinates and implements the Essential Studies Program in collaboration with the ES Committee.
  • Assesses Essential Studies Learning Outcomes in collaboration with the Director of Institutional Effectiveness & Accreditation, the ES and Assessment Committees, faculty teaching ES courses, and other faculty volunteers.  
  • Works with faculty, chairs, and deans to ensure that optimal number of ES courses will be offered each semester, on campus and online, in relation to ES goals and requirements, and university retention, persistence, and completion goals.
  • Works with departments to educate and support their students, chairs, faculty, and advisors about the validation & revalidation of ES courses. Works with the ES Committee to support a positive and effective process for the ES validations and revalidations.
  • Communicates with faculty teaching ES courses and students taking ES courses about the ES Program’s goals and intent, as well as the role the education provided by the ES Program plays for students after graduation – such as in their professional, civic, and personal lives.
  • Works with students and their advisors who have advising questions, concerns and petitions regarding Essential Studies requirements.
  • Serves as ES liaison to academic units and leadership throughout the university, and to support units, including TTaDA, Student Affairs, Registrar's Office, and Enrollment Services.

The Office of Extended Learning Support Unit provides marketing support, course development support, registration, payment collection, customer service and overall support for Self-Paced Enroll Anytime (SPEA) courses, students, and instructors.  The unit also supports functions for online semester-based courses (see below), as well as planning, registration, payment collection, and logistical assistance with UND Community Classes and UND-hosted conferences, camps and events.  In addition, premium services are available to non-credit courses and programs and externally hosted conferences and events.

    • Provides overall recruitment, marketing, and communication plans for the SPEA program.
    • Assists instructors with online course development, in cooperation with TTaDA Instructional Designers.
    • Provides online admission/registration/payment website for one-stop enrollment for SPEA students.
    • Processes registrations received through OEL’s Shopping Cart:
      • Entry into TargetX for new students
      • Enrollment into course(s) in PeopleSoft
    • Processes payments.
    • Invoices students or designated third party/company.
    • Sends welcome information to students to claim account, access Blackboard, order textbooks, etc.
    • Provides rosters to instructors, evaluation results to instructors and chairs, and enrollment reports to departments/colleges.

    • Processes payments from participants, vendors, and sponsors, and deposits money collected into the department’s approved local funding source.

    • Provides logistical assistance as needed for UND conferences, including information and assistance with parking, catering, safety forms, room reservations, and name badge printing.

    • Maintains graduate education policies, procedures, and assessment. SGS maintains all policies regarding graduate education at UND.
    • Develops and maintains the graduate student handbooks – Guide to Graduation and Dissertation and Thesis Style Guide.
    • Manages the creation and maintenance of all SGS forms within the DocuSign system.
    • Maintains official graduate student records and databases to track student status, submits data to departments and colleges, and provides faculty and staff advisors access to information regarding their advisees’ progression toward graduation.
  • Support to Graduate Students:
    • Monitors the degree progression for current students. Actions and processes involved include, but not limited to, to encourage registration and timely completion: review/approve forms and requirements for graduation, communicate with students/faculty/staff, determine eligibility for graduation, and probation and dismissals.
    • Review and process graduate student petitions.
    • Provides student service advising to graduate students on School of Graduate Studies’ policies, procedures, and requirements for graduation. Provide proactive outreach to students to support graduate student success at UND.

Core Services Specifics

  • Administration: Manages and supports 4 core Honors faculty/staff and affiliated instructors; provides leadership and administration for recruitment, advising, instruction, and retention efforts for 600+ students in Honors who typically double major.
  • Curriculum: Honors seminars are offered in a variety of topics each semester by Honors faculty. Works individually with faculty (approximately 18 per year) in other departments on offering Honors sections or seats, and ensures each semester's course offerings include a range of ES and disciplinary options for our students; responsible for validation and revalidation paperwork for HON courses.
  • Student support: Coordinates and oversees up to 50 undergraduate senior projects per academic year; these are high-impact practices that serve to retain students at UND.
  • Student applications for national scholarships: In collaboration with Fellowship Coordinator, encourages and supports applications to national scholarships, including the Truman, Fulbright, Critical Language Scholarships that help bring distinction to students and UND.
  • Faculty support: In collaboration with TTaDA, leads workshops and provides support for affiliated faculty regarding Honors pedagogy and the implementation of high-impact practices, including teaching abroad opportunities.
  • Leads civic education program through HON 260, building partnerships with local agencies and city officials and provides support for faculty developing service-learning or community-based learning opportunities in their Honors courses; Honors students contribute approximately 5,000 hours of service to the community annually.
  • Student advising: Provides academic-year advisement for a minimum of 200 students; provides faculty/staff support for one Honors student organization (HPSO).
  • Retention: Provides freshman orientation to promote student retention and success as they transition to the university community;   coordinates approximately 8-10 extracurricular Honors activities to attract and retain students; offers Honors tuition waivers to at least 50 new students each year; collaborates with departments/majors (e.g., engineering and nursing) to provide clear pathways for students to complete majors with Honors status; and offers a workshop series aimed at developing students’ competitiveness for scholarship/fellowships, as well as cultivating balance between work and life.
  • Recruitment: Hosts “Honors Breakfasts” the morning of Admitted Student days in spring to connect with prospective students and their parents; staffs tables at Saturday Visit Days and prospective student resource fairs throughout year; works with TRIO to connect with local high school students in their summer program.
  • Staffs tables at New Student Orientation week in July, Fall Open Houses, Junior Preview days, and the Major/Minor fair in the Fall.

Assessment of student learning for both cocurricular and academic programs is both required for accreditation and expected as a component in maintaining quality educational programs. Institutional accreditation is essential to the continued functioning of the university.  Requirements for ongoing accreditation involve regular reporting as specified within the Pathways accreditation system, completing the Annual Institutional Data Update, and submitting information for approval of new UND academic programs or in response to accreditor requests.  This office oversees all UND efforts in both areas.

  • Oversee and coach assessment throughout Academic Affairs programs by meeting with faculty in departments after Assessment Committee reviews to provide and explain feedback.
  • Oversee and assist with assessment needs throughout applicable cocurricular units by meeting with staff to provide explanations and feedback.
  • Meet with faculty in departments subject to upcoming reviews to ensure they are prepared and on track with assessment activities.
  • Facilitate and support the University Assessment Committee.
  • Be available on demand to individuals or departments/programs requesting assistance with assessment.
  • Initiate assessment improvement efforts in cases where departments appear to have special needs for consultation.
  • Participate in institutional service as requested and/or as needed in support of assessment progress across the institution.

  • Provides leadership and management of academic load advising, programming, and ongoing education for international policies for new and current students to reduce interruptions to their education.
  • Oversee, create, and maintain federal F, J, and M immigration records in the Student and Scholars, Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) as is required by USCIS and the U.S. Department of State. Provides a welcome letter, copy of the State’s brochure, appropriate forms, instructions for payment, and other matters per regulation.
  • Collaborates with University Admissions to recruit international students undergraduate and graduate.

  • Provides free, one-on-one writing consultations on writing from any discipline and at any point in the writing process starting the second week of fall and spring full semester classes and through summer semester. Students, staff, and faculty can work with a trained consultant to develop their writing skills with revision focused feedback from a peer reader. The Writing Center also provides resources such as manuals, style guides and handouts developed by the consultants.
  • Provides assistance with faculty writing groups, workshops and consultations for departments, and one-on-one consultations with faculty.

The primary goal of our clinical services is to provide and connect students with appropriate mental health and substance use services that support their academic and personal goals.  The UCC offers a range of therapeutic interventions and supports, including: Initial Assessment, Group Counseling and Workshops, Online Self-Help Programming, Individual Counseling, Substance Use Evaluation, Case Management, and Urgent/Crisis Services for UND students who are enrolled and have paid student service fees for the current semester.

  • Testing Services provides comprehensive testing services to support academic success. Administer standardized tests (i.e., Prometric, Pearson Vue, Collegeboard,) and University Testing (i.e., Accommodated, CLEP, TD) in service to the campus and regional communities.
  • Career Services, a part of the Experiential Learning Center, provides comprehensive support to students and alumni through a team of full-time staff and trained career mentors. Services include personalized resume and cover letter reviews, as well as guidance on job and internship searches, interview preparation, and networking strategies. Each semester, staff deliver tailored presentations and workshops for classes, student organizations, and groups such as Greek Life and Athletics. Career Services also manages Handshake, the university’s centralized platform for co-op, internship, part-time, and full-time employment opportunities. In addition, Career Services organizes major career and internship expos each fall and spring, facilitating direct connections between students and industry partners. To further support professional readiness, students and alumni have access to complimentary professional headshots and the Career Closet, which offers free professional attire for interviews and career-related events.
  • The Academic and Career Exploration (ACE) team is a collaborative effort between Career Service and Academic Core Advisors to serve students who are unsure of their major or unsure of career paths within different majors. In addition to individual student advising and application processing, Study Abroad hosts a variety of outreach activities each year—including classroom visits, information sessions, and the annual Study Abroad Fair held each fall—to promote global opportunities and increase student participation in international education. Study Abroad also collaborates closely with colleges, departments, and faculty to ensure programs align with academic goals and provide meaningful global learning experiences for UND students.
  • The Experiential Learning Center actively supports and promotes undergraduate research and creative scholarly activities across all disciplines. Through close collaboration with faculty, the Center provides students with structured opportunities to engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning both within and beyond their academic major. One key initiative includes a centralized platform where students can explore a wide range of research opportunities available across campus, making it easier to discover and apply for positions aligned with their interests and goals. Additionally, the Center assists in matching students with faculty-led research projects encourages students participating in these opportunities to present their work at campus, regional, and national conferences, as well as to contribute to publications and creative exhibitions.
  • Provides individualized, interactive processes, mandated by federal law, with students who disclose a disability/register with Student Disability Resources to identify “reasonable” accommodations that remove access barriers but do not decrease academic standards.
  • Supports students in negotiating arrangements for disability accommodations that provide access and opportunity in all UND courses, programs, or activities.
  • Collaborates with other units to provide disability accommodations: Testing Services for accommodated testing, Marketing and Creative Services for UND Signature events, Academic Support Services, UND Technology Services for alternate format for textbooks, classes, and instructional materials, and TTaDA for education and orientation.
  • Provides technical assistance about disability and access to higher education.
  • Provides academic accommodation in courses (i.e., alternate formats, accommodated testing, communications services) and accommodations for Housing and Residence Life.
  • Departments are responsible for funding accommodations for activities that are non-course based for faculty, staff, parents, or guests.  Student Disability Resources does not recharge or charge for their administrative costs.

The Student Finance Office administers financial assistance to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students through budgeting and awarding of Federal financial aid as well as University and other external funding.  In addition, the Student Finance Office provides the "backend" services to UND through setup and billing of tuition and fees, refund processing, third-party and external customer account billings, and waiver processing.

  • Administers and disburses $130 million in federal, state, private and institutional financial aid programs for undergraduate, graduate, law, and medical students.
  • Sets up tuition, fees and other charges and credits using PeopleSoft Campus Solutions to post to the students' and other customers' accounts:
    • Ensure tuition and fee setup is tied to the correct general ledger information.
    • Testing and implementation responsibilities for Campus Solutions PeopleSoft new functionality.
  • Ensure billing, financial aid, and payment programs are administered in compliance within UND, NDUS, State and Federal guidelines.
  • Works with Marketing and Creative Services to have accurate and updated university costs and financial aid programs publicly posted on the website and reviewed annually.
  • Provides financial aid counseling to students and families, academic advisors, and other student support units to enhance student retention.
  • Reviews eligibility for departmental and outside agency scholarships, awards, and waivers.
  • Manage recruitment scholarships and awards to enhance yield for high achieving students.
  • Provides services & training to UND departments who award scholarships, waivers, and other awards to students.
  • Processes data requests for departmental and federal reports related to student aid, awards, and cost.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and Payroll to manage the Federal Work-Study program in compliance with the Department of Education policy.
  • Responsible for all aspects of 3rd party billing of tuition and fees including federal agencies, businesses, etc.
  • Manage processing payments of military benefits for eligible students. Ensuring tuition assistance rates are adjusted to qualified students.
  • Manages workflow of the tuition waiver process and applies waivers based on the awarding department.
  • Award all new Cultural Diversity waiver to all incoming new students.
  • Manages the student financial aid refund process in accordance with federal rules and regulations.
  • Annually manage the GBLA training for staff and faculty who have access to Personally Identifiable Information student data in accordance with Department of Education policy.
  • Additional collections activities on individuals who have past due balances including registration holds all the way to collections and write offs.
  • Develops and manages communication plans specific to financial aid programs and student account billing and payment process to new and returning students.

  • Recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students from prospective students through enrolled.
  • University Admissions will partner with vendors and other key areas to obtain perspective student contact information to meet university enrollment goals.
  • Develops and maintains admissions applications for undergraduate and graduate prospective students within the standard application requirements and deadlines.
  • Processes and evaluates admissions applications in accordance with State Board of Higher Education policy, including transcript review, core course calculation, verification of requirements, and criminal history background checks.
  • Administers daily and Saturday campus visits and other special events hosted by University Admissions. Saturday visits do not include meal passes; if meals are desired, departments may request as a premium service.
  • Represents the University at high school visits, college and career fairs and other off-campus recruitment events.
  • Communicates with prospective through enrolled undergraduate and graduate contacts and their families in a variety of methods including phone, text, email, mail and in-person in an effort to recruit, nurture and yield students.
  • Communicates with high school counselors, community college contacts, and other influencers to nurture relationships and promote the University.
  • Develops and maintains program-specific communications for Strategic Investment Programs in cooperation with the Academic Deans and Marketing team.
