Promotional Product Guidelines
Those within the University may use trademarks, according to established guidelines, for purposes of recruitment, development or general promotion of the institution and/or group organization.
Ordering Promotional Products
It is your responsibility to ensure your department is following brand standards for promotional products. Items that do not follow standards will not be approved. Specific ordering steps can be found with our licensed vendor information.
If you have questions about logo usage, contact identity@UND.edu. If you have questions regarding licensing or promotional products, contact UND.licensing@UND.edu.
UND offers branded retractable banner and table throw templates. To request design files for a department order, complete the Marketing & Communications Project Request Form.
Imprint Options
Promotional products can help build awareness for the university plus a specific unit, but only if proper identification is included. For most items, using a logotype, unit logo or stamp is the preferred and best solution.
In some instances, small imprint areas may cause printing issues such as ink bleeding when using the logotypes or unit logos. In these cases, you can request a different product or printer from your vendor to see if the issue can be resolved. If ordering a different product or using a different printer is not possible, use an alternative layout option that follows brand standards.
The following examples show how our logos and trademarks can be used on promotional products.
Logotype
As the official mark of UND, the logotype is the default logo that should be used on University-focused promotional products.

Vertical Logotype
The vertical logotype should be used on promotional products when horizontal space is limited.

Primary Unit Logo
Unit logos are available to colleges, departments, schools, administrative offices, institutes and other University units. Unit logos are not created for degrees. The primary unit logo should be the default unit logo used on promotional products.

Informal Unit Logo / Multi-Unit Logo
An informal or multi-unit logo is best used on items communicating to an audience already familiar with UND (e.g., distributing items like cups, stickers, water bottles, etc. to current students, faculty or staff).

Vertical Unit Logo
The vertical unit logo is best used for internal audiences and for external audiences when space is limited.

Multiple Imprint Areas
Some products have more than one imprint area (e.g., cups, shirts, bags, pens, etc.). Multiple imprint areas allow flexibility as logos and text can be separated to allow for larger text sizes without breaking clear zone standards.

Flame Logo - Internal Audiences
The UND flame logo can be used alone when an imprint size is extremely limited and the item is for an internal audience or audience already familiar with UND. This option is also allowed for some unique wearable items like lapel pins, jewelry or other personal items.

Flame Logo with Text - Internal Audiences
Pairing the UND flame logo with unit identification displayed in a simple, easy-to-read font is acceptable. A few recommended fonts are Helvetica and Arial. Friz Quadrata, our UND logotype font, should not be used outside of UND’s official logos.
When communicating to an internal audience or audience already familiar with UND, including “ University of North Dakota” is not required.

Flame Logo with Text
Pairing the UND flame logo with unit identification displayed in a simple, easy-to-read font is acceptable. A few recommended fonts are Helvetica and Arial. Friz Quadrata, our UND logotype font, should not be used outside of UND’s official logos.
Include “ University of North Dakota” text on externally focused items to fully identify the University. When communicating to an internal audience or audience already familiar with UND, including “University of North Dakota” is not required.

Other Trademarks
University Seal
Limited use by approval of the Office of the President and Division of Marketing & Communications.
Fighting Hawks Name, Mascot and Logo
University of North Dakota Licensing reserves all rights to the name, image and likeness of the Fighting Hawk mascot. University of North Dakota Licensing reserves the right to deny any request that does not accurately represent the Fighting Hawk mascot — including, but not limited to, the use of plush items and naming an item the “Fighting Hawk.”
This mascot mark should be paired with University identification unless communicating to an internal audience or an audience already familiar with UND.
The Fighting Hawks logo is used to formally represent the University’s NCAA teams, Athletics Department and related groups. Non-athletic use of the Official Logo and Wordmark requires pre-approval by the Athletics Department.
Unique Logos
Unsure how your area’s unique logo works with promotional products, contact identity@UND.edu for guidance.
Color
Selecting the correct product color is essential to maintaining brand consistency.
Choose products in the correct UND colors — green, black, white, gray and silver. Prairie rose pink may be appropriate for certain promotional products. See the founding color standards for additional details. UND orange is not an acceptable product color unless it is specifically used to represent the UND eternal flame.
Color Variation and Shades
When selecting a product in brand colors, it is important to choose shades that closely match official UND colors. UND Licensing maintains a list of common product colors that are within an acceptable range of our official Pantone colors. If a color falls outside the approved range, it will not be approved and you must choose another color or another item.
Selecting a promotional item not connected to UND’s brand may only occur when there is a special initiative that requires adopting the initiative’s identity over UND’s brand (i.e., Wear Red Day).
Ink and Thread Colors
UND offers all logos in full and one-color options. Only the approved color combinations may be reproduced. Ink or thread used for other design elements should complement the UND logo. Default colors should be UND green, black, white, gray and silver.
Gold is not an acceptable color for promotional products purchased with UND funds. Silver should be selected to match brand standards. Any use of gold requires approval from identity@UND.edu
Licensed Vendor Storefronts
When opening a department, unit or student organization storefront, all brand and licensing standards must be followed.
Department or Unit Storefronts
- Apparel purchased with UND funds and worn by employees, including student employees, while representing the University, must follow all UND brand standards.
- UND unit logos or unit-identifying designs may only appear on black, white, gray/silver, or green products.
- All items must meet UND Licensing color range standards.
- University-required uniforms can be exempt from royalties. Questions on official uniforms for a department, contact UND.licensing@UND.edu for assistance.
Student Organization Storefronts
- Student organizations must obtain permission from their unit marketing professional
to use UND unit logos or unit-identifying designs in student organization storefronts.
- Products with unit logos or unit-identifying designs may only appear on black, white, gray/silver or green products.
- Student organizations may create items that reflect their own color schemes.
- Student organization products may use UND Founding Colors (green and pink), but can
be denied based on product type and how the design represents UND.
- Items that resemble retail-style merchandise may be approved depending on the product type.
- Apparel such as zip-ups, polos, vests, etc., that could be mistaken for official department-issued apparel or uniforms must follow all UND brand guidelines and may only appear on black, white, gray/silver or green products.
- All items using UND brand colors must meet UND Licensing color range standards.
Retail Merchandise
Retail merchandise is not the same as University promotional products or department apparel. These officially licensed products are bought by the general public through brick-and-mortar or online stores. Retail merchandise is selected based on personal style preferences and purchased with personal funds.
Some brand standards are different for retail merchandise to appeal to a specific audience. For instance, gold is allowed on wearable items like jewelry and just the UND flame logo can be placed on jewelry, pens, clocks and similar wearable and/or gift items.
Paper Products
All printed items must comply with UND brand standards. Printed items using UND trademarks for official university business, such as bulk stationery/letterhead, publications, and department handouts do not need to go through licensing. However, all printing jobs done off-campus need to be routed through Procurement & Payment Services to obtain competitive pricing.
Some printed items, such as vinyl, window clings, banner, backdrops etc., require the use of a licensed vendor.
